Recession Squeezes Puppeteers Redux
"There are many forces at work on puppetry economics, political oppression, religious prohibition, changing tastes, changing technology. In order to withstand these forces, a puppet company must be adaptable, resilient and flexible."

Those words were written by Andrew Periale, co-editor of Puppetry International in the Spring 2004 issue titled, The Puppet Survivor Challenge.

Those words still ring true in 2009. Puppeteers are always in a "survival " mode. Maybe because of that they're better equipped to weather a sustained recession. What do you think?

Recession Squeezes Puppeteers
The economic recession has settled in worldwide. Here in the USA puppeteers are starting to feel the effects- fewer bookings, smaller fees. And it's going to get worse. How do puppeteers in other countries cope? I hope you'll take a moment to share your thoughts in this blog on this important topic.

The working puppeteers I know are asking themselves, "How do I not only survive as an artist in these troubled economic times, but also, how do I thrive?"

If you have some ideas or an experience to share, please feel free. We could use all the help we can get.

Welcome!
Blogging has come to UNIMA-USA! Let's communicate!

Here's your chance to express yourself and share your thoughts with the world. Come blog with us.

Here's a good place to start. The latest issue of Puppetry International features thumbnail profiles of 40 outstanding puppet masters, all under the age of 40.

Are these artists shaping the world of puppetry?

If so, where is puppetry headed in the 21st Century?

Are there other influential puppet artists that should be recognized?

Leave a comment and see what others have to say.
